A new report from the Brookings Institution indicates 2.7 million people hold down green jobs in the United States. The report says 63,523 of those jobs are in Massachusetts, virtually the same as the 64,310 identified in a recent state-funded report. The Brookings study said the number of green jobs in Massachusetts had increased 3.3 percent since 2003 and their average salary was $47,815.
Nationally, the Brookings report says green jobs are most heavily concentrated in wastewater management and treatment (386,116) and mass transit (350,547).
The Boston metropolitan area ranked eighth highest in the country in terms of green jobs with 41,825, with the New York area coming in at number one with 152,034 jobs. Green jobs totaled 10,443 in Springfield, accounting for 3.5 percent of all jobs in the area, the sixth-highest share in the country.
